I mostly love it for the opening and for that incredible goodbye sequence where all the soldiers are at the train station. The duration and depth of each shot is staggering. It might even be better than the goodbye to the soldiers train station sequence in When Willie Comes Marching Home (another underrated one) with that never-ending kiss.Johnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02707753270598518341noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7279306243558348368.post-20521055852082496512012-06-15T02:59:13.765-07:002012-06-15T02:59:13.765-07:00Wonderful post. As you can I see I just really want everyone to watch Close Encounters ALL THE TIME.

I'll give you a piece of unsolicited advice about Ford that I tend to hand out a lot: Don't start with The Searchers. A lot of people do because it's one of his most acclaimed films, but it functions best as a summation of his themes and a commentary on his other movies. It's a hard one to get into if you don't have the experience of some of his other westerns to learn Ford's peculiar style.

Stagecoach, Grapes of Wrath, and My Darling Clementine are all good entry points.
