La bergère d'Ivry (1913)
dir Maurice Tourneur
The Horse Soldiers (1959)
dir. John Ford
Ford absolutely revelled in these layered dinner table compositions - the pivotal lunch in Stagecoach and the swearing in of the deputies in The Searchers stand out among others. Maurice Tourneur, father of Ford's contemporary Jacques, displays an early fondness for them and a compositional bravery far beyond the more famous Griffith and Ince.
