Burlesque (1930)
Thomas Hart Benton
Girlie Show (1941)
Edward Hopper
Two diametrically opposed takes on the same scene. Benton's salacious plunge into the scene feels like a painterly version of Orson Welles, Jean Renoir, or Spike Lee. Hopper's melancholy distance, by contrast, is more like Stanley Kubrick, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, or John Cassavetes.
